Lasting security for Britain & the West?
By Graham Richards
With Tony Blair appearing at the Iraq War Enquiry today, it got me thinking about the argument he made for justifying going to war with Iraq. He says that since 9/11 the world has changed and that taking proactive action will save the world from future terrorist activities and attacks. But to my mind, violence only breeds violence. The child who experiences violence as they grow is more likely to be violent when they are grown. And what about the resentment that violence breeds? The children and young people of Iraq and Afghanistan who have seen their families, villages, town and countries destroyed by Western military action, are they likely to be favourable towards the West in future? Or will they go the way that the Palestinian young people have gone and turn into suicide bombers? When violence is used in a defensive manor, such as resisting the attacks and invasions of the Nazis in WW2, it can, I believe, be justified. Good was fighting evil and the evil began the process. But these current conflicts are much more complex and it is not at all clear that our actions are the right or best ones to have taken. There is evidence that where local communities in Afghanistan have been worked with and invested in to turn away from heroin production and, instead, encouraged to grow valuable crops that can feed people at home and be sold for export, then a marked drop in support for the Taliban has been witnessed. There must surely always be alternative, non-violent ways to tackle these situations. It seems, sadly, that powerful governments are too often not interested in pursuing these options and think that going for the "quick kill" will result in a better outcome. As we have seen time and time again, it rarely, if ever does. |
