A to B - healthy environmental transport options

By Graham Richards

Call me nerdy, geeky or an anorak, but my favourite magazine is a small, bi-monthly publication entitled: A to B. It is, as far as I am aware, the only dedicated magazine for all things folding bicycle & electric bicycle.

Since the development of the world famous Brompton Folding Cycle (the "Rolls Royce" of folding cycles, by which all others are measured), folding cycles have been appearing from manufacturers and designers across the globe.

There are budget ones, lightweight ones, designer ones, sporty ones, weird ones and crappy ones. So far, none have matched or excelled the design, functionality and minimum folded size of the Brompton.

Manufacturers vary from small business set ups to major players in the cycling world. The Chinese and Taiwanese probably leading the field in sheer volume of designs and folding cyles produced, some under their own brands and some under the brand name of major western cycle producers.

What A to B does is test, review and comment on many of these, giving the reader a chance to make their mind up what is the best model for his or her needs. They also campaign for better transport policies that encourage people out of cars and onto public transport; review accessories (lights, bags, covers, child carriers, trailers, etc); run technical tests and feedback on components; feature articles by users of folding and electric cycles, including some fascinating travel stories.

Their other passion are electric cycles, which offer people with resticted physical abilities, or those who live in difficult, hilly areas, a chance to see how they can still be mobile, but without resorting to a car. There are even electric conversions for the Brompton folder now, which offers riders remarkable flexibility and scope in planning longer journeys.

Why do I love folding cycles? Well, I own a Brompton, which, when folded, enables me to carry it on buses and trains, whereas most cycles are either banned or severely restricted. It means that at either end of a journey I have the to scope to travel several miles beyond the terminii and to carry luggage in the cycle mounted bag, or on the rear luggage rack. If I want to go out into the country for a ride, I can simply take my cycle with me, in the car or on public transport. I can carry it indoors with me, knowing it is secure and not outside where cycle thieves can get to it. I've even considered a touring holiday, using public transport and the folding cycle in combination. It means avoiding long cycle journeys between distant towns, but the pleasure of shorter ones in rural areas, for example.

So, if you've a travel bug itching away, or just want a healthy optino to the car for commuting, get a copy of A to B and look at the folding and electric options awaiting you!
